Does student integration in schools matter in order to ensure educational equity?
Before the debate I didn't think that integration was necessary to ensure educational equity. I thought that as long as kids had good teachers and nice schools with libraries, science labs, computers, and other resources to help them learn they would get a quality education even if they had no kids of other races in their school. I thought that even if kids never integrated in schools and only rarely interacted with the other race, they would still be smart and able to function in society. After the debate I am much more conflicted. During the debate I was thinking to myself that diversity was not only the integration of races but the integration of personalities. And the more personalities you are around the more personalities you will have to deal with better preparing yourself for the future. But if schools were not integrated its not like the kids would not be around different personalities. Integration could create more diversity in personalities but it is not necessary to ensure diversity in personalities. Although integration is beneficial to ones education and could improve it in many ways it doesn't mean that you couldn't get a good education if schools were segregated. In conclusion, I still don't think integration is necessary to ensure educational equity.
