I do not think
Affirmative Action is a bad or ill intentioned idea, however I do not think it
is the right step that we should be taking. There is no doubt or debate about
the fact that college enrollment is overwhelmingly white, and that there is an
obscene amount of white privilege in this country. However, Affirmative Action
sets out to end setting people up for success or failure based on race, and
does this by giving people a leg up based on race. As much as Affirmative
Action seems like a positive response, you cannot rectify the issue you have
set out to solve using the same problem. To help minority students become
successful, focus should be set on funding under resourced schools, and more
attention should be put on the fact that legacy students have an unfair
advantage. Rather than give a few minority students a somewhat easy way out,
focus should be put on taking away the advantages, and making an equally
challenging playing field for all. Also, within the admissions process,
admittance should not be colorblind.
Personally, I find the term colorblind inherently racist in itself, we should
not aim to ignore the cultures of all applicants to a school. The goal should
be to realize that you can have a white applicant, an Asian applicant and a
Hispanic applicant, all of which are equally important to the diverse
community, and equally qualified for the school. The intention of the end result should be a society in which
it is not “just the way it is” for certain races to have advantages over
others, and while Affirmative Action is not an inherently bad idea, there could
be better steps to take.
