Is Affirmative Action Necessary ?
First and foremost, I believe it is necessary because it allows those of different ethnic groups/races to have the same opportunities as the white majority getting into college. While doing that, it also diversifies the campus; more minorities being accepted at lower requirements allows more of them to be accepted into colleges. Although it seems as if they are given easier access through the admission process, it does not exclude them from those who worked very hard or at least tried in order to get into that same school-- it just gives people who have struggled in high school, whether it was due to lack of support or motivation, personal home issues, and other factors that could have contributed to their "not as excellent" performance, a chance. Affirmative action also can establish a "potential over high merit" system in which people who didn't necessarily perform to the highest of their ability, can offer their potential and other aspects that they can contribute to the school. Affirmative action gives minorities more room for change-- granting minorities to move up on the ladder in the world because it gives motivation to strive for those college that they think they will never make it to. In closing, affirmative action will not completely elimination racial tensions within our world as a whole, but if we start making these minor changes within schools, it will no longer be a surprise that minorities are succeeding and able to get in college--it will become something that everyone is used to.
