Tommy McMahon- Does integration matter?
If this was a long time ago, I personally would have said not only yes, but it's something we should do pretty much immediately. And now, I still say yes. However, although it does matter doesn't mean its necessarily top priority. Personally for me, there's a few factors that play into that. One of the lesser one is the question: How would this be done? Does New York State just say "We're going to take (Insert name here), and put them in so-and-so school?" Is it permanent? Is it temporary? There's a lot of things that play into the actual action of it happening. Another factor is just that I find actually fixing the bare problem of education (the system) first. I think of it like this: If you had two injuries, a giant bleeding wound or an infected cut, which one would you treat first? I consider that giant wound to be the actual system, and that cut to be integration. They both need to be treated, but the bigger one should logically be treated first. A third factor is is it right for the student were throwing in? Sure we can throw certain kids of certain races into certain schools, but is that certain school right for that certain kid? It may not actually be planned out for that student to ultimately succeed. In conclusion, of course its important, but its not top priority.
