Ava Bridges - Affirmative Action Post

Coming into the debate I was for affirmative action because I just thought it was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, some minorities don’t have the same privileges whites do and need an extra boost to succeed. I didn’t really think of the cons of affirmative action until the debate on Friday. Something that stood out in my to me was how a minority might get a job over someone who has more skills, and is more qualified for the job just because they are a minority. This is not fair at all to the person who is more qualified because of a higher skill level, more experience, or a higher level of education. Another thing that stood out to me during the discussion was that a minority could be ill equipped for a school or job they have been accepted into, because they were a minority. In today’s society, we are trying to get rid of stereotypes and we want to have everyone considered equal. In my opinion, affirmative action is doing the complete opposite. It gives the impression that people who are considered a minority are less qualified and not as smart as whites and therefore need extra help in getting a good education and respectable job.
