Affirmative Action
I think
affirmative action is fair. Minorities are at a disadvantage just because of
their race. For the debate I was put on the side that stood but getting rid of affirmative action. I completely disagreed and it was hard to hear the arguments coming from my side because I believe affirmative action evens out the playing field or at least tries.
The majority of the wealthy are white, thus they can afford better schools,
environment, opportunities, extracurriculars, etc. Colleges are looking for well-rounded
students and the students with more money have more of a chance to become this well-rounded
candidate. Minorities usually have less money and sadly the child doesn't have
all these opportunities being unable to obtain that well-rounded status.
Affirmative action sees the disadvantage and gives these children hope that
even though they have all of the resources that they still have a chance.
However, some negativity does come from this. It allows kids to say, "You
are only here because of your a minority." I have heard this and to be
honest it is hurtful to hear. It made me doubt my abilities but at the end of
the day I knew that I worked hard. Minorities still have to work hard to get
what they want or actually even harder; affirmative action does not give one a free ride.
