Melik Henderson -Does Integration Matter?

The United States is a much different place then it was 60 years before but many argue that black and white communities are still segregated in some respect. Today many public schools have large populations of one racial group, over 90% of the school being one race. In general, schools with a large population being black or latino are worse off than schools with most of the population being white because of poverty and circumstance. It is proven that academically, minorities improve in integrated school environments. White students who are in more diverse schools also have better grades than those in predominantly white schools. It is important for kids in schools to be open to different perspectives and people from different walks of life. If a kid were to work with the same types of people for their entire childhood, when they go off on their own they will have only one perspective. School integration truly is a way of helping to eliminate segregation that still exists today.
