Nia: Affirmative Action

Affirmative action should not be eliminated, because it is absolutely necessary.  Racism, sexism, and the exclusion of the poor is deeply ingrained within American society.  These offensive ideals presently shape American culture.    The stigmas that come along with being a minority, a woman, an immigrant, or any other disadvantaged group is not just going to disappear on its own.  Affirmative action helps to level the playing ground for those previously disadvantaged.   It works towards ending the dominance of white males, while empowering those who are usually oppressed.

For example, Segregation was officially abolished in 1964 with the Civil Rights Bill.  That is exactly fifty years ago.  Five decades is hardly enough time to completely eradicate the stigma that comes with being African American.  Fifty years can not erase the pattern of Blacks and other non-whites being forced to live as second class citizens.  This is shown statistically looking at segregated neighborhoods and schools.  Despite the legislation of the Civil Rights Bill, many parts of the United States are still deeply segregated.  Affirmative action works to end the unscrupulous patterns of American discrimination.
