Gracie Gibbons- Affirmative Action

While affirmative action is a very complicated subject, I believe that it is overall essential in the making of educational equity.  Affirmative action encourages schools, companies, etc. to hire/accept a diverse group of people.  Affirmative action is also not exclusive to race.  It not only creates diversity in race, but also in gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, and more.  All of these minorities that may not have been chosen for a position only because they are a minority now have a fighting chance with affirmative action.  The truth of the matter is, some people in this world are sexist, racist, etc., and would not use affirmative action if it were not important in today’s society.  One subject that was touched on a lot in our discussion was the image of companies, schools, etc., and why affirmative action enforces these places to keep a diverse image and therefore be mindful of who they hire/accept.  The subject of the resources of someone depending on their privilege was also discussed thoroughly.  I believe that this is an extremely important factor of why affirmative action should not be eliminated because many people made the point that a non-minority could be more qualified than a minority in some situations.  However, in many cases, the minority could not have had the resources to be as qualified as the non-minority.  For example, maybe a student did not have a private tutor for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT.  This must be taken into account when this student is applying for college, which is where affirmative action comes into action.  Overall, affirmative action is extremely important in today’s society and should not be eliminated.
